Glass Tread Cantilevered Stair Systems in Jacksonville, FL

12mm tempered laminated glass treads that pull natural light through split-level and two-story spaces without the visual weight of wood or steel.

Jacksonville Floating Stairs installs 12mm tempered laminated glass tread systems that are rated, load-tested, and anchored to your specific structural conditions — not a generic catalog spec.

Glass treads work especially well in Jacksonville's open-plan homes where natural light matters. Two-story great rooms in St. Johns County, mezzanine lofts in Riverside, and split-level coastal homes in Atlantic Beach all benefit from the visual transparency that glass provides. Light moves through the staircase instead of being blocked by it.

Every glass panel is tempered and laminated so that breakage produces a controlled, safety-glass fracture pattern. The panels are anchored with point-fixed stainless hardware or set into recessed steel channel depending on tread geometry. We don't use adhesive-only mounting. Every connection is mechanical and rated for the applied loads.

Florida's humidity doesn't affect properly installed tempered glass. We use stainless hardware throughout — no zinc alloy or chrome-plated fasteners that corrode near the coast. The glass itself is sealed at edge profiles to prevent moisture intrusion at connection points. These are standard specs for us, not premium upgrades.

How We Build Glass Tread Systems

Glass tread staircase installation with mounting hardware visible
01
Structural Assessment & Tread Sizing
We calculate required panel thickness, span, and support geometry based on live load requirements and your stair's specific cantilever depth.
02
Custom Glass Panel Fabrication
Panels are cut and tempered to your exact tread dimensions. Edge profiles are polished and sealed. No catalog sizing — every panel is made for your staircase.
03
Steel Stringer & Anchor System Installation
Structural steel stringers are anchored to the wall with epoxy-set hardware. The steel carrier is the structural system. The glass sits in it.
04
Glass Panel Setting & Hardware Torque
Each panel is set with stainless point-fixed hardware or into recessed channel. Hardware is torqued to spec and verified before the next panel is placed.
05
Load Test & Final Inspection
We load-test the completed system and verify all connection points before permit inspection. The staircase is signed off by our structural engineer and the building department.

Where glass tread systems work best

Glass tread systems make the most sense in homes or commercial interiors where daylight, visual openness, and a high-end modern finish are the priority. The structure still does the heavy lifting, but the finished stair feels almost weightless when the detailing is right.

We spend more time on hardware selection, edge finishing, and vibration control with glass than we do on standard hardwood jobs. Those details decide whether the stair feels precise or feels delicate, and they are not the same thing.

Included in the planning
  • Laminated glass specified for the actual span and support points
  • Hardware layouts that keep the stair open without telegraphing every fastener
  • Careful coordination between wall structure, tread thickness, and railing loads

Glass Tread Systems — FAQ

Are glass treads safe for daily use with kids?
Yes. Tempered laminated glass is rated for residential stair loads and engineered to hold together if broken. We also install anti-slip surface treatments on every tread — the glass is not bare polished. Daily use by children is a normal requirement we design for.
Do glass treads show footprints and smudges?
They show marks like any glass surface. Most clients wipe them down weekly with standard glass cleaner. Low-iron glass — which has a clearer, less green tint — shows fingerprints slightly more than standard float glass but looks significantly better in the space.
Can glass treads handle Florida's humidity cycles?
Glass itself isn't affected by humidity. The concern is hardware corrosion at connection points. We use 316L stainless steel for all fasteners and hardware — the same grade used in marine applications. Jacksonville Beach and Atlantic Beach coastal environments aren't a problem with the right spec.
What thickness of glass is used for stair treads?
We use 12mm tempered laminated glass as a baseline. For wider treads or longer cantilever spans, we may specify thicker laminate assemblies. The thickness is determined by structural calculation, not catalog selection.
Are glass tread stairs code-compliant in Duval County?
Yes, when properly engineered and documented. Florida Building Code permits glass treads when the glass is tempered laminate, the connection system is engineered, and the permit package includes documentation of the glass specification. We handle all of that as part of the permit package.
